Mixed Marriages
Relationships of every type are faced with a wide variety of problems and challenges in any given situation. Whether it involves our coworkers, neighbors, friends or family ââ¬â the dynamics are relatively similar and predictable within a common cultural framework. These dynamics become more complex where marriage is concerned and differences in personalities come to the forefront. While these issues can be challenging enough for any married couple, there are additional difficulties specific to couples in a mixed marriage. For the purpose of this paper, mixed marriage is defined as a marriage of two people from different races, religions or cultures. Different customs and cultural backgrounds can directly impact your marriage and family life, as they tend to teach different values and priorities. This is particularly true in cases where a husband and wife were raised in different parts of the world. SPECIFIC POINTS Acceptance of the mix-marriage ââ¬â is a major obstacle as oft en times the families of both partners do not approve of their marriage.Mixed-marriage couples deal with unique challenges compared to traditional couples. The challenge with interracial couples is respecting each otherââ¬â¢s race and culture. If not, this can have a ripple effect to the extended family. Social attitude and prejudices For instance, one partnerââ¬â¢s prevalent social attitudes and common prejudices may begin to show more openly one day. ââ¬Å"When this happens, all you can do is to maintain a good-natured attitude and have lots of patience,â⬠Hans adds. But potential obstacles need to be clearly identified and frankly addressed before moving ahead.Nationalistic, ethnic, or social pride can also drive a wedge between otherwise loving spouses. One partner may (subconsciously) feel superior because he or she grew up in a ââ¬Å"higherâ⬠socio-economic class than the other. Or a spouse may feel owed something for having legalized the otherââ¬â¢s citiz enship through matrimony. Pride also raises its head when one spouse believes that the otherââ¬â¢s culture or beliefs are inferior or strange, thereby discounting the other personââ¬â¢s importance in the relationship.Racial offenses ââ¬â You want to avoid making any remarks including those in a joking manner. You can also simply make this clear to those around you by telling them that you will avoid interactions with someone who continues to be negative regarding your marriage. Firmly tell the person you will not spend time with anyone who expresses racist views. Interracial couples sometimes experience rejection or stress from their own families. This may occur because of traditional beliefs that people should marry of the same cultural background.Regardless of whether this is an issue in your marriage, it's still important to remember to respect the beliefs and traditions of your partner's family. Interracial relationships are much more common today. However, they can st ill bring unique challenges. Along with being aware of these four areas but also having sensitive and open communication, an interracial marriage can overcome the additional challenges. Yet it also offers plenty of opportunities for couples to learn from each other and to gain new perspectives on their lives and marriage.Communication is a key issue ââ¬â The nonverbal stimuli in a communication, like body language, can also lead to wrong expression and misunderstanding by different cultures. In addition, factor for space between people, certain actions, even a sense of taste needs to be taken to consideration. Communication of symbol is also important and can represent a groupââ¬â¢s identity ââ¬â speech like whatââ¬â¢s up, and ââ¬Ëyoââ¬â¢ are popular in Malaysia. Non verbal communication, High context and low context communication.Communication can be one of the biggest difficulties facing interracial or intercultural couples. This can include the challenge of li terally speaking different languages. At first, couples tend to enjoy hearing another language spoken, but this can also become a point of contention when misunderstandings occur or when the ââ¬Å"foreignâ⬠language is spoken at family gatherings. Communication also becomes an issue when it affects the way a couple solves problems. Family Structure ââ¬â issues such as male dominated societies (marriage culture), differing concepts of raising children. It always makes sense to find out as much as possible about your partnerââ¬â¢s family but it makes special sense to do so in mixed marriages ââ¬â especially concerning the culture and its traditional family structures. Mixed marriages often face additional struggles and challenges in the field of parenting. Raising a child always leads to conflicts if the parents are not on the same page. We werenââ¬â¢t sure how to raise our kid. Whose traditions do we pass on? â⬠ââ¬Å"My friends here do not struggle as much a s we do.But then again, they donââ¬â¢t have to synchronize two different sets of cultural and religious backgrounds,â⬠Hans concedes. The involvement of extended family members in the child-rearing process, behavioral expectations, and the question of what is considered appropriate frequently cause heated discussions between Hans and Ruba. ââ¬Å"Interestingly enough, we have always found a compromise so far. Despite our different outlooks, it helps us to know that we both want the best for our child.Itââ¬â¢s not easy, but we have some common ground in that. For example, I agreed that Eman should be raised as a Muslim because her faith is very important to my wife. But I didnââ¬â¢t want her grandparents to have too much of a say. For me, child-rearing is the parentsââ¬â¢ responsibility ââ¬â and only theirs. â⬠Different cultural attitudes towards the respective roles of men and women in the home can play havoc with this area of the relationship unless husba nds and wives can find ways to turn conflicts into opportunities for learning and growth.Religion and Politics ââ¬â Partners in mixed marriages may be supportive of each otherââ¬â¢s religious beliefs but still often run into unexpected issues. Differences in the way people in these marriages celebrate certain holidays or have dietary restrictions are to be expected. Politics can be problematic if world view is highly polarized ââ¬â ie. Convervative/Liberal/Socialist/Communist Food Culture ââ¬â We often clash over specific issues, like food. It drives me crazy that she doesnââ¬â¢t even let me cook pork. I think our arguments have gotten worse since the birth of our daughter. As in any relationship or marriage, both partners have to be flexible and open-minded when facing unexpected arguments and issues. INFORMATION TO DRAW FROM FOR SUMMARY OR WHATEVER In the first place, itââ¬â¢s important to acknowledge and understand how contrasting customs and cultural backgrou nds are likely to impact your marriage and family life. The way youââ¬â¢re brought up is the way youââ¬â¢ll live unless you make a conscious choice to embrace another option. Different customs and cultures teach different values and priorities.Normally, this means that interracial or multicultural couples have a unique need to bend, flex, compromise, and accommodate to one anotherââ¬â¢s contrasting ways of looking at life. This is especially true if a husband and wife grew up in different parts of the world. ââ¬Å"In mixed marriages, arguments may come up more often because of the different cultural backgrounds,â⬠Ruba says. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s just a lot more challenging. â⬠Clashing values ââ¬â When you come from different families of origin, you will make different assumptions about how a family works. These assumptions wonââ¬â¢t always be compatible. However, this is the case in most marriages. In an interracial relationship, thereââ¬â¢s a good chance that at least some of these challenges will be accented, especially if you choose to have children. Comparisons ââ¬â You and your partner bring unique differences to the marriage. These differences should be embraced and may likely be some of the most enriching parts of your lives. You want to discuss with your partner what you each consider most important in any traditions or cultural beliefs. 1. You both come from ends of the world, where the way of life is totally different.Yours will be a major leap of adjustments. The difference in practices about religion as well as political beliefs may have to result to one acquiescing to the otherââ¬â¢s belief just to have a harmonious relationship. 2. Prejudice on social practices, such as sex-selective abortion, often cause early breakup of the marriage as one may not be ready to fully embrace this new-found culture you are bound to live due to marriage. 3. The language barrier often results to miscommunication and misunderstandin g that sadly leads to divorce or separation.

Film Adaptations Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Film Adaptations - Essay Example It is no surprise that a film adaptation of a literary work has some differences from the way it is delivered in the book and this is due to a number of factors: collaboration of ideas, different perspectives, artistic direction, etc. Although a direct translation of a literary work may not really work with a film adaptation, the literary essence of it should be captured. This paper scrutinizes a film adaptation of the literary work of Tobias Wolff, This Boyââ¬â¢s Life, based on his memoirs of his youth. This tackles the important parts of the literary work and examines whether it is portrayed in the film the way it should be delivered. The Bond of a Mother and Son This Boyââ¬â¢s Life is the authorââ¬â¢s recollection of his youth. It is a book written in 1989 and adapted in film under Warner Brothers Picture. Tobias Wolff, or better known as Jack in both the book and the film, has an incredible bonding with his mother, Rosemary. His relationship with his mother is shown bril liantly in the film, although, his motherââ¬â¢s name in the book is different in the Last Name 3 film, which is Caroline. In the book, both Jack and his mother travel quite a lot due to his motherââ¬â¢s search for a better life for the both of them. Being left by his father, Jack, together with his mother, struggles hard in order to put an end to their unhappiness and money issues. At the onset of the film, Jack and his mother are in search of uranium, heading towards Salt Lake in their Nash. This scene is an important part in establishing the kind of relationship the two has, which is very well portrayed in the film. In the book, Chapters One and Two of Part I, it is explained that Jackââ¬â¢s travelling with his mother gives him an early exposure to the realities of life, which becomes the foundation of his aspirations to give his mother a good life and put an end their misery, (Wolff, Part I Chapters One and Two) which is delivered well in the film through its wonderful d irection. Father Figure In both the film and the book, it is evident that Jack has terrible father figures. Roy, for instance, is a boyfriend of his mother who follows her from Florida to Utah and tries to get her by befriending Jack. He gives Jack a Winchester 22 rifle as a gift and takes Jack to spy on his mom at work. He makes it seem like a game and through this; he is able to get Jackââ¬â¢s friendship. In the scene where Jack is playing with his new gift from Roy, the rifle, he hears the creaking of the bed in the other room, realizing that Roy and his mother are making out. The musical scoring supports Jackââ¬â¢s realization that Roy only tries to befriend him to get to his mother without having to narrate his thoughts unlike in the book. Although in the film, some scenes like the ââ¬Ëspyingââ¬â¢ and other not-so-major things Roy does in the book are not seen. Overall, the film still does a great portrayal of a terrible father figure in Roy. Immediately after that, they leave Utah for Seattle to Last Name 4 escape Roy. The film is able to adapt well from the book in portraying an image of a mother who is always ready to fall for a relationship for the sake of giving her son a father figure he needs. She falls for the gifts and the company a man gives to her son but when she notices that it is all just to get her, she immediately escapes. ââ¬Å"My mom had her own way of solving problems, she left them behind. Thatââ¬â¢s what she did with the Nash. She just left it there.â⬠(Wolff, Part I Chapter Two) In the film, Jackââ¬â¢s mother throws the uranium detector in the trash right after she talks to a man who tells her that there is no uranium in Salt Lake. The arrival of Dwight, Jackââ¬â¢s new father figure whom his mother eventually gets married with, is an interesting event in both the book and

Staffing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Staffing - Essay Example The criteria of selecting and recruiting personnel have changed over time for several reasons. In the context of this work, entertainment industry and its characteristic social dynamism is to be taken into consideration. The consumer community in the industry and the business environment in general demand more that the services. Efficiency, reliability and ethics are closely observed by the consumers. In that respect, the firm under question needs to reconsider its staffing policies and human resource practices. Key plans are important to achieve desired goals in the organization. The observed industry trends requires strategic plan towards staffing to meet the multivariate societal needs. Movie theater/entertainment industry is extensively associated with the emerging information and communication technology. In that respect, an informed internet based recruitment process would serve multiple roles in getting the best staff (Sears, 2003). In this plan, the following steps are key. This staffing plan constitutes a less costly and accurate online screening technique. It ensures that individuals who fail to meet the preliminary minimum qualification requirements are bundled out. This will help the firm to remain with the cream of the potential recruits. Such a plan would offer highly qualified potential organization staff besides incorporating the concept of interne knowledge and application among the staff. The competency level of an individual may not accurately be developed through mere presentation of credentials. Entertainment industry requires staff with ability to express themselves and make clear communication to fellow staff and customers (Bechet, 2008). In that regard, the actual potential of a recruit relies on ability to communicate effectively through written and spoken language of choice. In this regard, the following plan is appropriate. The combined outcome of such oral and written interview

Taylors Law and the Right to Strike by Public Employees Essay
Taylors Law and the Right to Strike by Public Employees - Essay Example Following the need to include transit public workers who were caught up in the strikes in 1966, George W. Taylor designed a law that was named after him. The chairman was a labor researcher who was not in great support of the public worker strikes. It is believed that other panel members did not want their name in the law as they considered the unions for public employees to be very articulate in opposing the new law2. His law gives the involved Public Employment and Relations Board that is selected by a governor the authority to solve contract disputes between the government and its workers. The Taylors law is also referred to as the fair employment act for The Public Employees andà is defined as article 14 of the New York civil service law. The Taylors law gives a framework for the public employee unions basic rights and limitations3. The Taylors law does not give the public employees and their unions a voice during strikes pertaining to injustices in their working environments. The law, for example, has been quoted as being extremely unjust to municipal workers in New York. The workers claim that the law does not give the government an incentive to rectify contracts problems on a timely basis. Through binding arbitration and mediation, it ensures that public employees are punished heavily for strikes. The Taylors law fails to protect them from work stoppages an illegal act that is punishable by jail time and fines4. Although the public employees feel abandoned by the Taylors Law during strikes on contract issues, the law made better amendments to the Condon-Wadlin Act that called for the firing of the employees upon participation in strikes5. The Taylors law gives employeesà in the public sector the right and freedom to organize a governing union and freely appoint their union leaders6. As defined by the law, it gives public employees permission to engage and negotiate terms of agreements with the
Primary Drawbacks of Net Present Value as Capital Budgeting Technique Assignment
Primary Drawbacks of Net Present Value as Capital Budgeting Technique - Assignment Example This entire process has multiple loopholes, for instance the uncertainty that is prevailing when it comes to estimating future cash flows of that investment opportunity is high enough to put this technique under scrutiny. Next loophole is regarding the discount rate that is used to reach the present value of a cash flow. Again the accuracy of discount rate used is of critical importance in determining the correct value of the cash flowââ¬â¢s present value. This makes NPV value dependent or sensitive to the value of discount rate and forecasted cash flows. Third loophole that is pretty much evident from the assessment of this tool is that this tool takes into account information that is present at the time of decision making, thus it does not take into account changes in the initial conditions of an investment opportunity. The fourth loophole that can be seen is that this tool is only applicable when projects being assessed are tangible and quantifiable. And in reality firms undert ake certain projects that are aimed at enhancing the brand equity, such projects are out of the scope of NPV (Kent & English, 2011). Question # 2: Comparison of Net Present Value and Internal Rate of Return: This tool or technique is another capital budgeting technique. IRR is the discount rate that turns the net present value of forecasted cash flows from an investment opportunity equal to zero. ... A decision regarding a particular investment opportunity that is based on NPV technique will find itself under scrutiny when assessed using IRR technique. While this fact is not true for independent projects where both techniques will yield similar results, but when it comes to mutually exclusive projects (one project or the other) these tools do not yield a consistent result. The reason behind this conflict is that the set of investment opportunity that is being assessed consists of projects that vary in their size and timings of their future cash flows (Helfert, 2004). So it is clear that if a company is deciding between two investment opportunities, it will encounter a problem when it is using NPV and IRR to assess the value of these investment opportunities for the company. In this conflicting situation the company shall have to decide whether it will make its decision based on NPP or IRR (Helfert, 2004). Question # 3: Avenues to raise equity for a Profit Driven Firm: A profit dr iven firm, if assumed to be a corporation, has multiple options at its disposal to raise new equity capital. The first option that it has is to go to its existing shareholder for additional capital. The second option it has is to add more shareholders into the company by offering new share in the primary market. The third option available to a profit driven firm is that it can seek help from a venture capitalist firm; again this will be in exchange for some portion of the companyââ¬â¢s equity. The fourth option available to the company is that it asks a bank for a loan in return for interest payments. These mentioned options are most suited to meet the companyââ¬â¢s short-term capital requirement

ACE Network Design Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
ACE Network Design - Essay Example Secondly, the extensive use of e-commerce by corporations in their business operations has instigated a heightened requirement for connectivity of businesses with rest of the world through internet. Local area networks have to be hooked with internet while ensuring maximum security. Emphasizing the interaction of Local Area Networks with internet, Comer (2006, p.3) states, ââ¬Å"From a userââ¬â¢s point view, the internet appears to consist of a set of application programs that use the underlying network to carry out useful communication tasks.â⬠The increased dependence of organizational operations on computer networks has prompted detailed planning and management of network designs. Szczuka, Daniel and Dominik (p. 269) observes, ââ¬Å"There has been an explosive growth in internet systems since the 1990s. Network design problems are one of the important issues in the building and expansion of computer networks and have attracted many related researchersââ¬â¢ attention.à ¢â¬ Advance Concepts Engineering (ACE) is a medium sized enterprise that deals with development and commercialization of products. Adoption and application of state-of-the-art technologies is a core business value at ACE. Although, presently ACE is operating is small setup but in the enterprise is in the phase of switching its business to a more specious building in an industrial park. This has generated a reasonably serious challenge of designing and implementing a network infrastructure that can meet the business requirement while keeping the core value of technological advancement intact. The network design and implementation is a challenging task in multistory building with a dozen of other design limitations. These limitations have given birth to a range from logical to physical issues in network implementation. These issues include the issues of network scalability, convergence, security, high availability, stability and network traffic management. ACE would require careful ly designed network architecture to achieve these corporate objectives. This report will present a detailed network infrastructure design to accommodate all business and technological needs of the network. The report will present also present a diagrammatic overview of the topological layout of network infrastructure devices. Moreover, to streamline the process of network design and management a number of requirements will be formulated and finalized. These requirements may include the number and type of components like user machines, switches, routers and servers, network availability details, addressing scheme, media to be used in the network and mechanisms to eradicate network and mechanical noise. Network Media The selection of network media is an important decision in network design and management. The decision of media can directly affect the network speed, sustainability and maintenance. The selection of media is topology dependent. Topology is the physical layout of network devices, (Ciccarelli & Faulkne, 2004, p.88) and the decision once made on topology and network media is seldom changed or it might be very expensive to change this decision at a later stage to cater network management or optimization issues. The selection of media for a network environment also depends on the user speed requirements, available resources and future network expansion plans. The ACE network will use a mix of unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) and fiber optic cables. Drop cables or patch cables that run from wall fixed faceplates to computers, printers, scanners, IP Phones and other user end devices will use CAT6 UTP cables, CAT6 UTP standard support the gigabit speed for network traffic. Faceplates will further connect these devices to switches placed in a separate switch rooms.

Logistics and Supply Chain Management Case Study
Logistics and Supply Chain Management - Case Study Example Examples like Wal-Mart and Benetton are in front of us where logistics transformed the form of core competence which is strategically positioned for bringing market success for the organization (Drew & Smith 1995). This, on one hand, gives a competitive advantage to one organization, on the other hand, it is achieved at the cost of exploiting the other. Such exploitation in market terms can be labeled as 'weapon' that once used against the competitor provides benefit at the cost of bringing loss to the competitor. This can be illustrated by the fact that an organization can increase or decrease the goods supply to the market or can purchase the services of major supply chain companies irrespective of the fact he uses them or not, but to choke other companies particularly competitors from getting supply chain services for their goods supply. Unless the competitor is efficient enough to detect what is going on behind the curtain, he is unable to rectify the cold war being played agains t him by his rivals. However, Drew & Smith (1995, pp. 24-33) points out that excessive exploitation can produce dangerous results if the organization adopts a rigid behavior. Similarly, this 'explosive weapon' can result in fatal blind spots if used in a single direction without considering other factors. For instance, supply chain integration once stops at the factory door may annoy large organizations to exploit more but since logistic firms are aimed to improve their performances, such exploitation will probably not work. Traditional supply chain delivers limited value to companies for which there is a political competition going on among competitors. In contemporary fast-paced supply chains, managers or CEOs lack insight into the ripple effects of their decision (Boyson et al 2004, p. 99). Logistical challenges are confronted by the firms who not only assume a static environment but look at each problem individually. For instance, a company when switches from long-term contracts to short-term buys it suffers temporarily for the decision will influence the logistic options available to the organization including short-term variability, the price of the product and supplies.Ã With the lengthening of supply chains, logistics executives are increasingly taking the onus on their shoulders for anticipating and eliminating a greater number of risks. Though contemporary stakes are high that what they were five years ago resulting in an average profitability loss of 107% (Logistics 2009). But at the same time CEOs are struggling to prioritize the overwhelming number of risks that indirectly leads to unfocused plans and poorly coordinated responses (ibid). Competing with others become critical for the logistic firms when there is a concern to reduce costs while continuing to guarantee the quality of products. This requires ensuring efficient execution of outsourced activities in a complex trading and production scenario which is a difficult phenomenon in a compet itive environment. In this context, it is indispensable to identify, evaluate and extenuate potential disruptions in SCM in a systemic manner so as to control or minimize the risk of product recalls (Gomer 2009).
